Having a German Name is beneficial as long as it sounds German and not, like totally rad and quirky, man. So while my mispronounced German Name may score points with the hip crowd, my academic cred is lost in translation. I do have one professor here in grad school who very kindly tries to help me regain my German glory by thoughtfully refusing to ever spell my name correctly. Who could mistake Funcke for American slang? Adorno would be proud.
